In 2003-2004, what looked like two oil rigs made up part of the skyline of Portland, Maine’s waterfront. They were in fact offshore, semi-submersible, oil drilling vessels being built by Cianbro, an employee-owned construction company based out of Pittsfield, ME. Construction went on 24 hours a day, keeping the site constantly aglow with work lights and welding torches.

One night I was on a Casco Bay ferry cruising past the construction site and I noticed the twinking lights of the welding torches shimmering in the reflection of Portland Harbor. I took the photograph that this painting was based on. It wasn’t the best quality photo as it was at night on a rocking ferry, but I was most interested in the contrast and colors, not detail, so it served as adequate inspiration.

Original Painting

The original painting is only 8×10 inches, watercolor on paper. I mixed a lot of gum arabic in the watercolors which helped give it such deep, vibrant colors.

The orignial painitng is SOLD, but prints of Oil Rigs at Night are available for purchase at my online print store.
