Painting of a Pink House on the Androscoggin River in Maine.

This is one of the first paintnigs I did after I first moved to Maine. My wife and I were exploring our new home and enjoying the Fall foliage near Mechanic Falls when we came upon this house on the Androscoggin River. The pink house with it’s reflection in the water framed by the Autumn colors was too good to pass up.
We found a safe place to pull over then walked back up to the bridge to take some photos. We couldn’t get close enough to figure out the relationship between the house and the structure behind it. To this day I’m still not sure if it was a dam, or a mill building. The structure in the foreground however did seem like it was being used as a private residecne.
Original Painting
During the time we stumbled across this home, I was experimenting with milk paint. Milk paint was popular in Colonial America and is still used as furniture paint. I was intrigued by it’s history and it’s completely natural components and wanted to explore how it could be used as a fine art medium. Unfortunately it dries very quickly and does not lend itself to blending, so I had to premix almost every color. I am happy with the paintings I did in milk paint, but it was not one of my favorite mediums to use.
The original painting was painted on an 11×14 birch panel. I had it hanging in a gallery in downtown Portland, Maine. The gallery shut down without notifying me and never returned the painting, so I have no idea where it is now. Even though the orignial painitng is unavailable, prints of Pink House in Autumn are availablw for purchase at my online print store.
